A Kashan Persian carpet, mid-20th century, with a central floral medallion to a red field, and a triple navy and red border.

 

Right between Isfahan and Teheran, lies the city of Keshan which was important as a trading & a resting place along the Silk Road. The city has been famous for a long time for its textiles, carpets, silk and its pottery. Superior carpets were manufactured here during the Safavid Dynasty (1502-1736). Today the carpets are made both in and the surrounding of Keshan with high knot density in both superior wool and silk. The patterns consists of beautifully designed medallions, trees and figural motifs. Dominating colours are blue, red and beige.

Even wear to pile. Some minor marks. Losses to tassels.

From the collection of Nigell and Heather D’Oyly

Nigell and Heather have been passionate collectors throughout their married life. The core of their collection was inherited from the J W French side of Nigell’s family, who were prosperous flour millers based in Bow, Chelsea and Ware. Their notable relatives include Sir Charles D’Oyly, 7th Baronet (1781-1845), an accomplished watercolourist based in Calcutta, and Sir John D’Oyly, 1st Baronet of Kandy, Ceylon (1774-1824).
