Mid 20th Century, Pair of Carved Wood and Polychrome Painted, Ceremonial, Isar and Gangaur Figures, each Mounted on a Rectangular Stand with Short Turned Legs, (Indian).

 

The statues represent Gauri, the wife of Lord Shiva, and Gana (Shiva), and are central to the Gangaur Festival celebrated in Rajasthan. The festival is a celebration of spring, harvest, and marital fidelity. Unmarried women worship the goddess Gauri for a good husband, while married women pray for their husband's welfare and a happy married life.

 

CONDITION:

 

Wear commensurate with age. Lovely patina.
