19th Century, Heal & Son, Mahogany Chest of Drawers (English)

 

An attractive Victorian (C. 1860 - 1890) mahogany chest of drawers with two short over four long drawers. The drawers feature hand cut, dovetailed joints and mahogany lined drawers with easy brush inlaid borders, confirming even the inner workings of this piece are of superb quality. Each drawer has brass locks (with original keys) and each stamped 'VR', finished with polished bun handles. The chest frame features decorative rounded corners, raised on four feet, and a solid unmarked mahogany top.

The company evolved into a renowned furniture retailer, adopting Arts and Crafts design principles under Ambrose Heal in the late 19th century and remaining on Tottenham Court Road since 1818.
