Late 19th Century, Large, Carved Sycamore Model of a Luxury Yacht on Oak Stand and Marble Base (French).
An impressive piece which has to be seen to be fully appreciated. This carved sycamore shipbuilders model of a luxury yacht is carved from one solid piece of sycamore and is heavy, even without its removable marble base. It intricate details include a keel and portholes.
Historically these models would have been used by shipwrights to plan hull design and symmetry, or as a decorative piece to commemorate a specific vessel.
CONDITION:
Wear commensurate with age. No visible cracks or deep scratches.
PROVENANCE:
From the Estate of a second-generation, prominent French gentleman with private apartments in Paris, London and New York. He was a keen sailor and had inherited this piece from his father who was a French Diplomat, explorer and adventurer.
