In the 1800's, White Fish Island was a significant site for Indigenous peoples and was recognised as belonging to the Batchewana First Nation. The Island was a location of Indigenous settlement, trade, and fishing activities.
In 1882, an American trading ship, the Venus, provided the islanders with cotton seeds for future crops.
